Microsoft Office has pretty much cornered the market in easy to use office software for many years, but these days there are a few free alternatives available which are increasing in popularity.
These open source software downloads are becoming more and more popular, but will they eventually get to the number one spot? The trouble is that if you buy a program like Microsoft office, it is only allowed to be legally downloaded onto one computer.
This means that even a reasonable purchase price can become a problem for many larger organizations which have numerous computers. For this reason many universities, companies and even government offices around the world are now opting to use free open source office software. So whats available in a free office package? Well, pretty much everything thats available anywhere else to be honest.
You can use spreadsheets just the same, which can be linked to data from various databases and can do the same types of calculations. They are mostly easy to master, especially if youve had previous experience of working on spreadsheets.
Written letters and documents can also be created, and they even have the usual auto correctors and spell checkers which many of us simply couldnt manage without these days. Lots of these office packages also have drawing features, so you can even design your own logos or other artistic creations, for work, for home or just for fun.
The simple to follow instructions can make the whole job remarkably easy and fun to do. So whats the verdict? While much of the world is still very happily working with MS Office, which, lets face it, most of us are very familiar with and if it aint broke, you dont need to fix it, others are waking up to the possibilities of a free alternative.
Its just a case of getting used to the way of things, but with the many advances and improvements in open source software over the last few years, theres little wonder that many people are choosing a free alternative when it comes to renewing their office software packages.
If you get an OpenOffice download you wont need to pay for an office package. Simple to use and all for free, what could be better than that?
